Since the hospital closing in 2010 due to State Budget Cuts, not much has been going on on the land of the Westborough State Hospital. Located in between the hospital and Lake Chauncy are sports fields where younger children play soccer, but other than that, there is not much left other than a bunch of old, run down buildings. At the moment, the town of Westborough is auctioning off almost 37 acres of land with over 60 of the historical structures located on it.
The Town of Westborough has elected other parts of this land to go to a company named Pulte Homes, which will tear down the historical buildings (in their section) to build over 700 units of housing. These houses will be built specifically for elders (65 and older) to live upon. Most of the standing buildings on the land of the Westborough State Hospital are marked with red "X"s (as seen above) which was placed their by the town. This means that the building is abandoned, and in case of an emergency (i.e. fire) their is no need to search for people or belongings inside. Buildings and fences are marked with "NO TRESPASSING" signs as well, also placed by the town of Westborough in the hope that no one will enter. The main reason that they do not want people inside these historical structures is because there is proof of asbestos and remnants of lead paint on the walls. As well, the floors are unstable and can collapse with any pressure put upon them. There were numerous Mental Hospitals in the state of Massachusetts, these included Boston, Grafton, Gardner, etc. At this point in time, there are only a few of these mental hospitals still in business. These include Worcester and Taunton. Located near the Westborough State Hospital was the Grafton State Hospital. Although it was closed in 1973, there is still a lot going on on the grounds that was once a mental hospital. At the moment, located on the land is Tufts, which is a graduate school for Veterinary Students and also a veterinary hospital for numerous types of animals. |
